I'm heading to rural Haiti (again) – where we finally have electricity thanks to solar panels. what sort of phone do I need, and does your idea work with…? not an iPhone, I guess, so I need to get the phone you have…Can you help me, to get hot spot for laptop that is less pricey than AT&T? (anything is cheaper than that, right?) So I will need much much more than 2 G, as we will be at least 25 miles and straight up 4000 feet….we do get "service" if you can call it that, but my Haitian colleague wants to get a signal booster – which from all I can gather, will not help as there is no cable…hell, there's no toilet, no toilet paper…! rmontreynaud@gmail.com THANKS.

you will be throttled again after a little while they're only giving you there prorated plan for a short period of time to fool you into thinking you have a better speed and then it'll eventually dropped back down

One year later and I still haven't figured it out. Also, has anyone tried using this method with a Mac?

FoxFi is junk.  First of all the wifi doesn't work on MOST devices.  And if you look on their website you'll see a very, very limited number of phones that it will work on.  The major phones e.g. even Samsung s6 or s7 or iPhones it will not do wifi.  It's nothing more than PDAnet.
This brings me to the other point.  PDAnet is junk also.  It doesn't work and even when it does many carries have gotten wise to it and will keep your from installing it.  Yeah, there is a "backdoor" to get it in.  But that begs the question "why would you want to"?
PDAnet once install is painfully slow.  It looses connections frequently.  And if you want to use it as a local hot spot through your tether laptop, you can't do it.  They have a "beta" that's suppose to help, but is DOA.
Another problem with PDAnet is that it connects to android (don't know iPhone) as a camera — what you say?  Yep as a camera.  Which means while you are on the net on the few times PDAnet does work you don't have access to your phone other then the pictures.  There goes downloading music and putting it straight on your phone.  Or doing anything else with your phone like syncing.
But if that's not bad enough, at least for me, it leaves it this way.  Uninstalling the driver on laptop and reinstalling the driver (usb driver provided by carrier) will put it back so I can sync/download music or files to my phone after this step.
Now I'm not going to say which one(s) but there are several other tethers — just look at the playstore — that work far, far better than FoxFi/PDA.net.  They cost a heck of lot less.  And don't have the limitations of FoxFi/PDAnet I've listed.
So to sum it up: FoxFi/PDAnet SUCKS.

I was wondering if instead of using a PC, I could use an Android tablet instead? Would I be able to effectively tether to an Android tablet or would I have to use a device with an operating system like Windows or OSX? Thank you

Since T-mobile is being dicks about allowing people with Unlimited plans to get around their stupid tethering policy, we need to figure out a way to bypass T-mobiles stupid algorithm that detects if we are hiding our usage. I'm wondering if a VPN would help out with that because you could scramble your IP around, and so in theory they should be able to figure out where the usage is really coming from. If anyone has an Idea I'm sure it will help for all of us.

Can you update this video. T-Mobile changed their tethering policies. It gives me unlimited tethering but after 7 GBs. Its reduces speed to 128kpbs. Can you make a video on how to bypass this.
